Lug N Loaded

Lug N Loaded is a co-op heist puzzle game for iPhone. Pack every item into the suitcase before the alarm trips, solo or with a friend.

We built it at the Apple Developer Academy in 2023 and brought it back for its App Store release in 2026. Two players share one suitcase over Game Center, and only one of them can see the alarm code, so the game only works when you talk.

Lug N Loaded case study cover

Overview

Lug N Loaded is a cooperative puzzle game for iPhone about two masked thieves, one suitcase and not much time. You drag the loot into a grid, turn pieces until they fit, and close the case before the clock runs out. Then an alarm trips. One player holds the keypad. The other is the only one who can see the code.

We made the first version in 2023 as a team at the Apple Developer Academy in Indonesia. Kevin, Nuki and Anggara from ADA Studio built it with Axel, Abraham and Deaz. In 2026 we picked it back up and shipped it. It is free on the App Store, with no sign-up and no in-app purchases.

The challenge

Packing puzzles are usually quiet, single-player games. You stare at a grid, rotate a shape and think. That loop is good, but it gives a second person nothing to do except watch.

We wanted a co-op party game for iPhone where the second player is needed. The question was how to share one small puzzle across two phones so that neither person can carry the other. The rules also had to be simple enough for a first-time player to learn in about a minute. A party game that needs a manual does not get played at parties.

There was a pacing problem too. A heist only feels tense if the clock is real. The timer had to put pressure on players without making the game punishing for beginners.

Our approach

Discovery

Think about packing a real suitcase with someone else. One person holds the bag and the other calls out what goes where. Somebody always knows a thing the other one needs. We built the game on that idea. Split the information between the players, and they have to talk.

Each player sees the suitcase from their own side. When the alarm goes off, one of them gets the keypad and only the other gets the code. Neither can clear the alarm alone.

Design

A heist needs a reason, so the game opens with a four-panel comic before level one. A crooked mayor has been hoarding, and two thieves have one night to take it back and give it away. It is short and a little silly, and it explains why you are stuffing a camera and a gold bar into a suitcase at midnight.

The art is flat and thick-lined so items read clearly on a phone screen. Each item has its own silhouette. That matters when your partner is shouting "the long one, no, the other long one".

The alarm code carries most of the design. Plain digits would make it a reading test. So each digit appears as a little sum, such as a square minus a number or a square root. Your partner solves four tiny problems out loud while you wait at the keypad. A correct code adds five seconds to the clock. A wrong one takes five away. Players who cannot talk out loud have a fallback, because the partner holding the code can tap the digits in instead.

Build

The game runs on iPhone and uses Game Center for real-time co-op. You can invite a friend, get matched with someone, or share a six-digit code to join the same heist. Because matchmaking and identity come from Game Center, players never create an account with us.

There are three moves to learn. Drag an item from your bag into the suitcase. Double-tap to rotate it. Punch in the code when the alarm trips. The first-time tutorial uses three items, one of them a lamp that only fits sideways, so it teaches rotation by making you need it.

For replay value there are eleven handmade levels and a random heist mode. The handmade levels start at the Mayor's mansion, a 7 × 3 suitcase with 60 seconds on the clock. They end at Senpai's Card Shop, level 11, a 12 × 5 suitcase with four minutes. Suitcases, item counts and alarms grow as you go. Random heists pick any suitcase from 4 × 3 up to 8 × 4, and every one is solvable. A random puzzle with no answer would break trust in the whole game, so we treated that as a hard rule.

Key features

  • Real-time co-op over Game Center, by invite, matchmaking or a six-digit code
  • An alarm round where one player has the keypad and the other has the code, written as sums
  • Eleven handmade levels plus endless random heists that are always solvable
  • Three free hints a day, each showing a glowing ghost of where an item goes
  • Up to three stars per level and best-time leaderboards for solo and duo play
  • Nine badges to earn and keep in your briefcase
  • A three-item tutorial the first time you open the game
  • Free to play, with no accounts and no in-app purchases

What we learned

Splitting information gives a co-op game more than splitting tasks. If each player packed half the suitcase, you would have two people playing solo side by side. Giving the code to one player and the keypad to the other forces a conversation, and the conversation is the game.

Time pressure needs a way back. The five-second reward for a correct code gives a struggling pair a chance to recover. Hints do the same for the packing. Three a day is enough to get unstuck without turning the puzzle into a walkthrough.

Shipping is its own project. The 2023 Academy build had the core idea. The 2026 App Store release added a first-time tutorial and best-time leaderboards, and we spent real time on the parts players touch first, like the title screen where you drag the start button past a velvet rope.

The same skills carry into client work. Designing an interaction a stranger understands in seconds, drawing an interface that reads at a glance and building on Apple platform services are what we do on every iOS project.

You can download Lug N Loaded on the App Store and try it with a friend tonight.
